ABOUT DREW

I grew up in Brisbane and have spent most of the last decade living in the northern rivers, minus a couple of years studying for a fine art degree in Tasmania and travelling. I missed the unique climate and the surf culture of the Byron Shire, so I moved back and ended up in South Golden.
For a few years, I have been toying with the idea of starting a barbershop but only if it had the right kind of architecture and a rad location. When that first COVID lockdown started in 2020 things got strange and there was so much uncertainty. I would go for walks around
Byron Bay looking at how many shops had been gutted, it was super dystopian. I realised that there has to be opportunity amongst all this chaos, and that’s when I found the shop for lease in Brunswick Heads. Electric Mermaid was born.
I have unequivocally disregarded the cookie-cutter barbershop style and created a sci-fi surf shack, where you can come in to have a rant, shred the space invaders arcade machine and experience a legit, no bullshit traditional barbering service. The shop is also an art gallery, showing sculpture, drawings, furniture and Jewellery I have created.

I love the fact that the community are exposed to my creations and unknowingly give me a critic. It creates a dialogue, evokes feeling and hopefully inspires others to be creative.
So that’s pretty much it for now, I left out all of the tedious details about how I was a fitter and turner for 17 years before I did a barber apprenticeship in Byron Bay amongst other experiences. I plan on doing some more cool shit between now and when I get dead so
hopefully, you’re all along for the voyage.
